Export Processing Zones (EPZs) are particularly suitable for non-EAC exports.
Presentation of EPZs
More than 50 EPZs are currently in operation or development. Individual EPZs are mainly located in Nairobi, Athi River (25 kilometers from Nairobi), Mombasa, nearby Kilifi and Malindi, Voi and Kimwarer.
The investment process is facilitated by the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA).
Plots in EPZ can be rented for up to 50 years.
To operate in an EPZ, firms —that may be 100% foreign owned— must obtain a license from the the EPZA. Enterprises have to meet the following requirements
Export at least 80 percent of the production outside of the EAC region. | Domestic sales cannot exceed 20% and are subject to government approval and payment of all taxes | Only new investments in Kenya are allowed | The primary place of business must be EPZ entity |
The attractiveness of EPZs
The EPZ scheme offers a wide range of fiscal, physical and procedures incentives to ensure lower cost operations, faster set up and smoother operations.
